NMTS Ride Schedule

NOTE: In addition to these one time rides, the club has recurring rides most days of the week. To view them, choose the "Weekly Rides" link in the menu at your left.

Pace is the speed, plus or minus one, that will be maintained on flat terrain with no wind. Distance refers to miles traveled in a day; on multi-day rides it refers to total miles for the trip, and a daily average is calculated from that.

HELMETS CSPC, Snell or ANSI Approved Helmets are REQUIRED for all NMTS rides.
EBIKES Class 1 E-bikes are welcome where conditions allow, and at the ride leader's discretion. Class 2 and Class 3 E-bikes are not permitted on NMTS rides.

Meet at the intersection of NM 117 and I-40, which is exit 89, just east of Grants, NM. Park at the gas station/gift shop, away from customer parking. The ride heads south on NM 117, along the eastern edge of the El Malpais lava beds. This is a two-lane road, but the pavement is good and there is very little traffic. At mile 18, we will stop and take a break at La Ventana nartural arch, which is the largest in the state. Riders can turn around here for 36 miles round trip, or continue on to Lava Falls for a round-trip distance of 59 miles. This ride is has a gentle climb on the way out to La Ventana, but no significant hills. The scenery is fantastic, with wonderful views over the lava beds to the west and the steep cliffs of mesas to the east. Carpool from the Old Town parking lot on the west side of 20th St. just north of Mountain Road, leaving no later than 7:45 AM. There are restrooms at La Ventana, but no water or other services along the route; we will have a SAG driver to bring water and snacks to the La Ventana stop.
