Phoenix in January

How about a break from the cold? Ride in shorts and short sleeve jersey in Phoenix this January! Drive to Phoenix on Monday January 15th. Ride the 16th, 17th and 18th and return to Albuquerque on that day.

Phoenix is one of the bike friendliest cities in the US. Bicycling magazine ranked it 16th Bike-Friendly City.

January 16th through the 18th

We will stay at the Best Western Inn at 670 N Scottsdale Road, Tempe Arizona

Rides

We will ride some popular Phoenix routes. Possible bike rides (might change between now and then) are:

January 16 – South Mountain, 32 miles, X pace, 1 minor hills
January 17 – Paradise Valley Tour, 35 miles, X pace or a longer route of ~50 miles through Fountain Hills. (Your choice!)
January 18 – Usery Pass 28 miles, X pace, 3 moderate hills

We will start at Best Western Inn of Tempe first day. Second day, Mike Davila will take a group to Fountain Hills at a A/B level pace while Will Ferrell will lead a slower group through Paradise Valley. We drive to Ellsworth & Main St in Mesa for third day of riding.

We will ride only on bike trails and streets with bike lanes. A choice of a lunch spot will be made as we go. We see something we like, we stop.

Riders can choose to ride with the fast or slow group each day. The ride start time is 10:00 am so that we ride in the heat of the day.

The last day is a shorter ride and will start earlier (9:00 am) so that you will have time to drive back.

Best Western Inn of Tempe

For those of you driving in from Payson, you stay on US 87 until you reach the 202 which heads west. The motel is located off the 202 on Scottsdale Road. For those of you like me who use Interstate 17 to go to Phoenix, you will go through Phoenix, until you reach the 202 which heads east. The special rate for NMTS is $109.99/night for a double(two people). That includes breakfast and a small fridge in the room.
