Riding the Gap Trail Three members of the NMTS rode the Gap Trail in October of 2016. We will tell about our journey, and why we made some diversions to our main plan. Hint (Hurricane Mathew). The Great Allegheny Passage, combined with the C&O Canal Towpath, creates the Gap Trail which is a 334.5 mile journey from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., or visa-versa if you please. We decided to accomplish this journey in 8 days. The Great Allegheny Passage winds 150 miles through the mountains of Southwest Pennsylvania and connects Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, Md. There are small towns every ten miles or so that provide the essential amenities. The GAP connects to the C&O Canal Towpath in Cumberland. The C & O Canal is a national park which preserves the towpath which once transported goods between Washington, DC and the towns leading up to Cumberland. We called it the Donkey Trail. The towpath follows the Potomac River for 184.5 miles and connects with the GAP at mile '0' (Canal Place) in Cumberland. Even though its common to ride both trails together, the two trails provide a very different experience.

September's meeting features Pat Roddy's Ireland Trip

Says club VP Pat Roddy:

“I spent two weeks biking around Ireland in June of 2017. The trip was divided into two parts: a solo, hub-and-spoke tour with minimal planning and a point-to-point self guided tour with friends. I will go over the pros and cons of showing up in a foreign country with almost no idea what you're doing as well as those of relying on somebody else to tell you what to do. The presentation will also highlight the benefits of using technology such as GPS and Strava while on tour. ”

Eat, Sleep, Ride ... A first-timer's bicycle tour on the Great Divide! Completed by Adventure Cycling Association in 1997, the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is the world's longest off-pavement bicycle route. Stretching from Banff, Alberta, Canada to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, USA, the route is 2,768 miles long and includes nearly 200,000 vertical feet of climbing while criss-crossing the Continental Divide 32 times. It travels through remote back-country overlapping wildlife ranges for grizzly, cougar, moose, wolf, pronghorn, deer and more. Intervals between services are frequently 100+ miles and demand carefully calculated food/water ressupply along the way. In 2016, with experience exclusively limited to highway bicycle touring, Russ McCoy sought to complete this route as part of his "bucket list" of bicycle travel adventures. How did it go? What was the plan? What the cost? What worked? What didn't? See the photos. Hear the stories. Come to the meeting!

Where is the SAFETY in traffic for the biking community?

Discuss what story the data tells us and what the research indicates for safer biking on New Mexico roads.

Linda Atkinson, Executive Director, DWI Resource Center, founded the DWI Resource Center (1992) and the Victim’s Rights Project (2002). As one of the foremost experts on the DWI issues in New Mexico, she has held several Governor-appointed positions, developed data driven, research based policies and programs aimed at reducing DWI deaths and injuries. Ms. Atkinson is involved in public policy development and legislative advocacy, legal advocacy for victim’s rights, trains court monitors, and also serves as a consultant to local businesses regarding Drug Free Workplace policies, implementation and education.

A more recent project has been developing a crash mapping application (www.nmcrashmap.com) for Dona Ana County. It is used as a planning tool for law enforcement (and the public), showing where locations are at high risk for crashes to occur by day of week and #me of day. As funding allows, we plan to provide the app to all communities in New Mexico.

At the October 17, 2016 meeting we are privileged to have certified instructors from Project Heart Start attend to educate NMTS members as well as visitors on the use of compression-only CPR.
The PHS program has two components. The first is a 12 minute video that demonstrates how to perform compression-only CPR. The second component is a 15-30 minute hands-on session with a mannequin to learn how to actually perform the chest compressions. Both components will be covered in this meeting.
