Due to requests by club members I will be leading a Saturday ride to Belen with return on the Rail Runner train. Lunch stop will be at The Rail Café at the Belen train depot. This special Saturday train will return us to the starting point at 1:20 pm.

Because space is limited (18) on the train and to give everyone in the club a fair chance of participating in a bike/train ride I have instituted the following policy. Registrations will be accepted starting on Wednesday, August 13. Registrations before that date will be ignored. Register via email tdsulli@unmalumni.com or voice mail 299-6545. Saturday, August 30, 2008 0900am El Malpais
The ride heads south on NM117, along the eastern edge of the El Malpais lava beds. This is a two-lane road, but the pavement is good and there is very little traffic. At mile 18, we will stop and take a break at La Ventana nartural arch, which is the largest in the state. Riders can turn around here for 36 miles round trip, or continue on to Lava Falls for a round-trip distance of 60 miles. This ride is has a gentle climb on the way out to La Ventana, but no significant hills. The scenery is fantastic, with wonderful views over the lava beds to the west and the steep cliffs of mesas to the east. There are restrooms at La Ventana, but no water or other services along the route. If you have a non-riding friend or family member who would like to volunteer, I am looking for someone who can drive SAG for this ride, to bring along water and snacks. Please call Bill at 299-0302 if you can help.

Monday, September 1, 2008 0830am Lee Hilley Memorial Ride
This was the last ride Lee Hilley led for the club. Come on out and honor Lee's indomitable spirit. It will be conducted as both a Slug ride and a non-Slug ride.Lunch afterwards at Bumble Bee for those that are interested.

Here is Lee's description: This is not a particularly easy ride but all due diligence will be directed toward the Slug contingent so no one will be left behind. The ups and downs will be concentrated on the first half with some fun roller-coaster moments. This will be in newer developments in the NW area with PAVED ROADS! Lucky people. Then we'll dip south around the city limits and finally return to the start through the city.

Saturday, September 13, 2008 0900am Velo Valle Grande
We had such a great time on this ride in June that it deserves repeating before the weather gets cold. This ride involves over 3000 feet of climbing from Jemez Springs to Valle Grande, with some moderately steep sections. However, on the plus side, the scenery and views are wonderful, and you get to descend the hills you worked so hard to climb on the way back. Lunch at Deb’s Deli after the ride.

Will Pedal for Food Metric Century
As in the past few years, it's the second Saturday of Balloon Fiesta. I'm sure that the riders in the Touring Society will show their kind hearts again this year to help battle hunger in New Mexico. With the state of today's economy, I'm sure that the situation is worse than it has been the past five years of this event. I look forward to another successful WP4F under sunny skies, no wind and balloons all around.

A Nonperishable Food or Monetary Donation to the Roadrunner Food Bank is Suggested. See the Flyer for more details. Last year, NMTS raised over 5,200 pounds of food to help fight hunger in our state. More New Mexicans than ever are going hungry, so here’s our chance to make a difference to a family, senior or child in need.

Attention NMTS'ers who are having to stay off the bike or those significant others who don't understand the appeal of lycra and hours in the saddle: we need rest stop and check-in volunteers for this year's Will Pedal for Food Metric Century on October 11th. Even if you have one arm in a sling for a (God forbid) broken collarbone, this is your chance to help with our annual food drive to help fight hunger in New Mexico. If you're interested in helping herd riders or keeping them fed and hydrated, give Jim Goodding a call at 463-0565 or email jgoodding@hotmail.com. Let's break last year's total of 5,200 pounds of food raised for Roadrunner Food Bank.

It's time to blow the dust off of the cookbook to find that recipe for Grandma's Death by Chocolate Brownies (grannie does love chocolate, doesn’t she?) or use up those squash from the garden for that zucchini bread recipe that's been passed down through generations. The annual Will Pedal for Food Metric Century will be Saturday October 11th, and we need those special treats at the rest stops along the route. This is the sixth-annual food drive ride, where NMTS helps battle hunger in New Mexico. We'll zip along a route with three rest stops manned by “rest stop saints” featuring the best treats this side of the Mississippi. If you'd like to show off your prowess in the kitchen for this year's Will Pedal ride, give Jim Goodding a shout at 463-0565 or email him at jgoodding@hotmail.com.
